As companies grow, so does their need to employee staff that will support this.  Making sure that staff have the skills needed to fulfill their roles and the motivation to progress their knowledge in their particular area, becomes a neccessary requirement of employers and the individual.

The Learning and Skills Council has recognised the need for increased skills among employees; they have put together a campaign to provide the information needed for both individuals and companies, to encourage skill development and take control of the future.

The motiovation for this campaign is based on a series of facts outlining the lack of skilled workers in the UK and how this is going to affect companies in the future.

Five million adults in the UK have no qualifications at all. (The Leitch Review - Skills in the UK, 2006)

There are 10.3 million adults in the UK of working age without a Level 2 qualification. (Labour Force Survey Q4 2006)

One in six employers (16%) in England are experiencing skills gaps in their workplace - equivalent to 1.3 million workers - and of that, nearly eight in ten (79%) say it has had an impact on their business. (LSC's National Employer Skills Survey 2005 (NESS))

Almost one in twenty organisations face recruitment difficulties, with 143,000 jobs remaining unfilled because of a lack of skilled candidates. (LSC's National Employer Skills Survey 2005 (NESS))

It is estimated that skills gaps cost £165,000 for a typical 50 employee business every yesr. (National Audit Office - Employers' perspectives on improving skills for employment, December 2005)

By 2014, it is estimated that two-thirds - two in three - of all jobs in England will be held by people with at least Level 3 qualifications. (Working Futures - SSDA 2005)

In less than 10 years there will be very few jobs that require no skills at all. (Working Futures 2004 - 2014, Qualifications Report, Wilson and Bosworth, 2006)

All facts originate from the Learning and Skills Council, Skills Killer Facts, launched 9 July 2007.
